CHAPTER EIGHT

Onyx

The next day, I am still sitting next to Starr’s bed with her mother, as usual. I have been praying for the doctor to be right about her waking up any minute. When the paramedics were rushing her to the emergency room three days ago, it was so they could operate on her. As it turns out, she had more internal damage than anyone knew. She had a couple of broken ribs and one of the ribs had punctured her lung. They had to rush her to surgery because she couldn’t breathe and they needed to repair the lung tissue.

I had never prayed so hard in my life. Looking at Starr now, with the tubes in her mouth and the IV in her arm, has me beside myself. I wonder if anyone understands the extent of my love for her. I would lay my own life on the line if she would be spared. If I were there when the hit and run happened, I would have pushed Starr out of the way and gladly taken that hit to spare her from any of this.

That is how much I love Starr. Her mom had been giving me the evil eye ever since the accident happened, but I think over the last couple of days, she has started to understand that this wasn’t my fault. I just think at the time, she needed someone to blame and since I was the one with Starr, it was better to blame me for this instead of the person who actually hit her.

My parents called earlier to see if there was any change in Starr’s condition and I said no. They said they would be by to visit her later. I just hope she opens her eyes so she can see that I’m here for her and that I’ve always been here.

I squeeze her hand and say, “I’m here baby. I won’t leave without you.”

I bring her hand to my lips and kiss it. Her mom looks at me with pain in her eyes. Her dad went down to the cafeteria to get some coffee for him and his wife. He asked did I want anything, but I declined. I don’t want anything until Starr wakes up. If that means I’ll go without food for a week, so be it.

Mr. Mark returns with the coffee and a muffin for each of them. He hands me a water and a bag of chips, but I decline.

“Onyx, you have to eat or drink something man. What good will you be for Starr if you end up in the hospital with dehydration? Here, take this water and eat these chips,” her dad says.

“Thanks Mr. Mark, but I’m not hungry.”

“Do I need to call your parents and let them know that you haven’t eaten in two days?” Ms. Nina asks with a stern look on her face.

“No ma’am,” I say as I take the chips and bottle of water from Starr’s dad.

“Thank you sir,” I say to him.
